Azerbaijan railways are working on a project to construct a railway between the Turkish city of Kars and Azerbaijan territory – Nakhchevan. Baku will be connected with Kars through the Baku-Tbilisi-Karse railways and prolonging this route further to Nakhchevan will enable Azerbaijan to keep the land connections with the Nakhchevan autonomous territory of Azerbaijan. A feasibility study is being prepared for this project. It envisages constructing a 230 kilometers long railway track. This will cost around $1 billion. Considering the importance of this route for Azerbaijan, it is highly possible that the Azeri side will provide soft credit to Turkey. If this project is implemented, Armenia will be in further isolation.
