Minister for Reintegration Paata Zakareishvili has recently stated that it looks like Russia is not very much interested in the idea of reopening the Abkhazian segment of the railways connecting Georgia with Russia. He said the Russian side has not expressed their interest towards this issue so far. Zakareishvili stated that two meetings have been held between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gregory Karasyn and Georgia’s special envoy for Georgian-Russian relations Zurab Abashidze. However, this issue has not been touched upon. According to the Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania, it is a political issue which could be beneficial for the whole region from the economic point of view.
