Georgia to harvest 90,000 tons of wheat

Approximately 90,000 tons of wheat will be harvested in Georgia in 2013. Rezonansi reports around 55, 000 hectares were cultivated for wheat this year. That means that Georgian farmers will receive around two tons of wheat for each hectare. This is enough to satisfy only 10% of the country’s overall demand for wheat. To compare in 2003 Georgia cultivated 117,000 hectares and harvested 225,000 tons of wheat which satisfied 24% of the country’s then consumption. The biggest wheat harvest was in 2000. The wheat harvest satisfied 35% of the country’s consumption that year. Meanwhile, the amount of imported wheat increases in Georgia year by year.
