Analysts have been always challenging the system how the officials calculate the number of employed and unemployed. The National Statistics Office of Georgia identified that there are 1.7 million people employed in Georgia; more than 1 million out of this figure are self-employed. 300,000 people are employed in the state budget organizations. Most controversies concern the rural population.
Officially, if a farmer owns certain plot of land, he is considered to be employed, even if he has no financial recourses to plough, cultivate and irrigate the land, buy fertilizers, and take other steps to survive.
So, the analysts think that such a method for calculating employed/unemployed is faulty.
