The data from Georgian Railway confirms the fact that from January-June, 2013, Georgian railways received profit of around 41 million GEL. However, this figure is lower than in the same period last year. This is a result of a decrease in the cargo turnover at Georgian Railways this year.
The year before the August War of 2008, Georgia transported around 22 million tons of cargo, but when the economic crisis struck, these figures began to decline. Together with the occupation of Georgian territories by Russia, hard times had begun for Georgian Railways.
Georgian Railway is accumulating debt, which will soon come to $1 billion USD. Analysts express their opinion that under these circumstances, the railways might be sold to private entities.
