Timber cutting – disastrous for Georgia
Friday, December 20
22 years ago, 38% of Georgian territory was covered by forests. There are no reliable figures nowadays, but environmental protection organizations keep repeating that this figure has dramatically decreased.
According to official information, 68 licenses have been issued to different companies allowing them to cut trees and, unfortunately, many of these companies carry out illegal cutting to receive more timber then they are supposed to.
Environmental protection groups are giving alarm signals to the Georgian government, urging the government to take action to avoid serious environmental and economic problems in the future. (The Messenger)
