Georgian Railway transported around 19 million tons of cargo in 2013. However, in the previous years it used to transport 21-22 million tons of cargo. As the Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of Georgian Railway, Koka Guntsadze said, there are different reasons for the decrease of the cargo turnover.
He said the major reason is decrease of crude oil transportation from Kazakhstan. There were some complications in neighboring countries concerning the transit of crude oil and in May-June-July 2013, the transit of Kazakh oil was temporarily suspended.
In 2013, transportation of wheat also decreased, which is mainly transited from Russia and Ukraine to Armenia.
