During the census in 2002 it appeared that there were 3,668 villages in Georgia. Nobody lives in 164 villages nowadays, in 152 villages there are from one to ten residents and in 169 villages there are only 11 to 25 residents.
The analysts presume that the situation worsened during the last twelve years and that the number of deserted villages might have even increased to more than 300.
The Georgian Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure thinks that the law on Georgian highlands is out of date and obsolete and therefore needs to be amended.
There is a special Demographics Revival Foundation in Georgia, which is expanding special programs for establishing some taxation privileges for the population living in the highlands.
