On April 2007, the Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II announced that he would baptize the third children in a family. The initiative aimed to improve a grave demographic situation in Georgia. Statistics show that from the late 20th century the birth rate of Georgians is decreasing.
This is due to a high level of migration of those who are of reproduction age. Thus, there are fewer marriages in the country. Steps are being made to change this demographic and the social situation in the country. Employment and more social assistance are still required for solving the serious problem.
