Silk production problematic in Georgia

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, some solid segments of the Georgian economy almost died. This happened to the tea industry. The similar could be said about production of silk as well and there are no conditions to revive it.

During the Soviet times, Georgia annually produced up to 3,000 tonnes of silk.

The development of the silk industry primarily depends on mulberry trees. Although in 1992 the Georgian government issued an order to ban cutting mulberry trees, the population does not obey it.

Currently some steps have been taken in this direction. However, efforts should be more direct, straightforward and efficient.
