South Ossetia parliament to discuss joining Russia
It was the parliament’s speaker who said this on Monday, as quoted by Itar-Tass.
“We do not renounce our slogans, there will be no two-pronged approach to this issue,” he said. “The question will be put to a referendum, but a fully formed, consolidated, working parliament must discuss this issue.” The party United Ossetia, which recently received 46 percent of votes in an election, promised during the campaign to unite the region with Russia, as a first step toward the final goal of joining together with North Ossetia, which is an autonomous republic inside Russia.
The leader of United Ossetia is Valeri Bibilov, an ally of former president Kokoity. The election was held on June 8, 2013, but was not recognized by the international community, or by Georgia. (Democracy and Freedom Watch)
Akhalaia criticizes Georgian-Armenian agreement from prison
There were raised several important issues in last week in Georgia. Among them are the agreement on exchanging classified information signed between Georgia and Armenia. Some analysts say that this agreement prevents Georgia’s aspirations towards NATO because Armenia is a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. The second issue was related to the opening Abkhazian railway. Another issue was related to Su-25 attack aircrafts. “They cannot open the Abkhazian railway; they have no right to sell Su-25 attack aircrafts, as for the agreement on exchanging classified information signed between Georgia and Armenia we just do not need such agreement with Armenia”, Georgia’s former Defence Minister Bacho Akhalaia said in an interview with Frontnews on Monday.
According to Akhalaia, “the agreement on exchanging classified information signed between Georgia and Armenia is a foolish contract, as Armenia is a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. We just do not need such agreement with Armenia. We can exchange some information within the framework of our friendly relations with Armenia”. “The issue of the Abkhazian railway is related to serious problems. This issue should not have been raised at the official meeting. As for the refusal regarding the opening of this railway, this is not surprising, as the current government of Georgia cannot open the railway. We the people of Georgia will not allow it. As for the Su-25 attack aircrafts, they were in good conditions; we can renovate Su-25 attack aircrafts, however, we can also produce the new aircrafts. If Georgia sells these Su-25 attack aircrafts, it will affect Georgia’s defencive capabilities”, Bacho Akhalaia said. (frontnews)
Russian experts in Georgia to inspect produce
Russian experts will now join together with specialists from Georgia’s National Food Agency and go on an inspection tour to Kakheti, a region in the east of Georgia.
There they will examine potatoes, tomatoes, cucumber, cabbage, eggplant, cherry, apricots, peaches, plums, persimmons, kiwi, and berries which are being prepared for export to Russia.
Rosselkhoznadzor’s experts will examine the goods to make sure that there is no food safety risk involved.
After visiting Kakheti, the group will go on to examine products in Gori, a town to the west of the capital.
In November, 2013, Rosselkhoznadzor sent inspectors to examine citrus fruits in Georgia that was being prepared to be exported to Russia. Last year, Georgia exported more than 12,000 tons of citrus fruits to its northern neighbor.
After the change of government in October 2012, the new coalition started talks with Russia to restore export of Georgian wine and agricultural products to the Russian market, beginning in the end of 2012.
In the first five months of 2014, Georgia exported 15,641,383 bottles of wine to Russia, which is 68 percent of the country’s total wine export. (Democracy and Freedom Watch)
Government approves national military strategy
The main security task of the state of Georgia is the de-occupation of the occupied territories and the peaceful restoration of its territorial integrity - says Georgia`s national military strategy approved by the government of Georgia on Monday.
The main military-political document has been prepared as a result of the consultations with the European Union and the NATO and it describes the threats which Georgia is facing currently.
The list of the threats also includes regional instability, trans-national and cyber -threats, natural and technogenic catastrophe threats. (rustavi2)
The restoration of five-sided meeting in Gali may be removed from Geneva International Discussions
Issue of restoration of five-sided meeting in Gali may be positively resolved at the next round of Geneva International Discussions and, therefore, it may be removed from the agenda, acting Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia Vakhtang Quolbaia said at the meeting with the NGO representatives and journalists in Zugdidi.According to Quolbaia, the Abkhazian side is interested in restoration of five-sided meeting in Gali. “There are some technical issues, but I think it is possible to resolve these details. Issue of restoration of five-sided meeting in Gali may be positively resolved at the next round of Geneva International Discussions and, therefore, it may be removed from the agenda”, Quolbaia said.The next round of the Geneva International Discussions will be held on 7-8 October, 2014.
