Court dismisses appeal of Chief Joint of Staff

The Court of Appeals dismissed the appeal of former Chief of the Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces General Giorgi Kalandadze against current Minister of Justice Thea Tsulukiani.
Kalandadze demanded compensation for moral damages from the Minister of Justice, who according to him offended his honor, dignity and business reputation. However, the Court of Appeals denied his request.
According to Tsulukiani, the decision from the court was welcomed by her.
The minister said that even today, she was proud of the procedures she carried out while detaining Kalandadze.
“During the detention procedure I correctly followed all the procedures and respected his rights. I did not offend his dignity in any way. However, he filed an appeal against me. Fortunately, all his attempts to harm my reputation ended in failure, and this obviously is pleasant for me,” stated Tsulukiani.
Before the Appeals Court’s decision, Tbilisi City Court dismissed Kalandadze’s lawsuit against Tsulukiani on December 27, 2013.
The confrontation began last year when Tkulukiani gave an interview to Rustavi 2’s Pozitsia program, where she spoke about Kalandadze’s activities in a negative context.
The court upheld the arguments of defendant Tsulukiani, who stressed that Kalandadze was a public figure and she used rechecked information and not unproven facts with regard to the general.
