Sea Transport Agency warns about poor condition of Georgian sailors in Africa
The Sea Transport Agency has informed Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and Sailors’ Professional Unions concerning poor conditions of Georgian sailors in Africa, at Cotonou Seaport.
The Agency has announced that they were contacted by several Georgian sailors from one of the ships stopped at the Cotonou Seaport, who told them they had no drinking water and food.
"They told us that the ship was under the management of one of the Greek companies that faced financial problems and failed to give salaries to the crew. They also said that there were five more ships under the same company in the region with 25 Georgian sailors on them,” the Agency said, noting they still have a contact with the sailors who initially telephoned them and their families.
The Agency statement also reads that they had tried to contact with the Greek company. However, the latter refrained from any communication.
