I did not know that the war was beginning – Patriarch
“I did not know that the war was beginning; the government did not consider it necessary to notify me,” said Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II said on an Imedi talk show yesterday, referring to the August War of 2008.
“The country was going to war and yet the Patriarch did not know anything about it," said His Holiness.
He recalled that period and described it as a very difficult time for Georgia. "I decided to go to Gori anyway. We saw brave men lying dead in the field. Our trip was so dangerous that our car was escorted. Gori was a dead city,” the Patriarch said.
Ilia ll said the Abkhaz and the Ossetian peoples should know that their progress and development can only be achieved together with their Georgian neighbours. "I am sure that there will be a time when Ossetians and Abkhazians will understand this and will return again into Georgia’s fold,” said the Patriarch. (IPN)
