Georgia not considering to restore railway communication with Russia

The issue of the restoration of railway communication between Georgia and Russia via Abkhazia was not discussed in the Georgian government, the Georgian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Teymuraz Sharashenidze told reporters Aug.7.

“Besides the economic component, this issue is also politically motivated,” he said.

For Georgia, the issue of opening this railway is equivalent to the threat of territorial integrity, the diplomat said.

The railway communication between Georgia and Russia was terminated in August 1992.

Large-scale military action was launched between Georgia and Russia in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008.

Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.

Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
