12-year girl dies in accident in Gudauri

A 12-year girl has died in a skiing accident in Gudauri. An 18-year old boy collided with her on the ski slopes. The girl died at the scene, while the boy has been hospitalized. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched an investigation into the incident.

Three Men, Suspected of Trying to Sell Radioactive Material, Arrested

The Georgian State Security Service said on Monday that it had arrested three men caught trying to sell a radioactive substance, Cesium-137.

The three men, identified as Mirian B., born in 1979; Konstantine B., born in 1971, and Ioseb Ch., born in 1976, were arrested while trying to sell the Cs-137 for USD 100,000, according to the security agency.

The State Security Service has declined to disclose who the potential buyer was or whether it was a sting operation. The quantity of the seized radioactive substance was also not reported.

According to the State Security Service, the three men bought the Cs-137 and kept it in Tbilisi before trying to sell it.

Georgian fencer wins World Cup competition

Georgian fencer Sandro Bazadze celebrated his first victory of the New Year by claiming victory at a Fencing World Cup competition in Turkey over the weekend.

Bazadze took first place at the International Fencing Federation's Satellite event in Turkish city of Istanbul where he competed along with 12 other Georgians.

The young Georgian athlete overcame Canada's Joseph Polossifakis in the tournament's final for the sabre category with a score 15:13.

Polossifakis had beaten Bazadze's brother Beka in his semifinal match while the eventual winner had eliminated his teammate Mikheil Mardaleishvili in his play-off fixture.

The three Georgian athletes contributed to the national team's total for medals at the competition that ran between January 9 and 10.

The tournament featured eight male and five female fencers from Georgia.

Bazadze became the first Georgian to win a gold medal at the European youth fencing championships in 2013, while he also claimed gold medal at the Under 23 European Championship in Tbilisi in 2014.

Following the event in Istanbul, the national team members will participate in joint training with their Russian counterparts later in the month before departing for the World and European Cup competitions in Italy starting January 29.

Visa liberalization with the EU will be completed by summer - Davit Bakradze

According to the State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Davit Bakradze, visa liberalization with the EU will be completed by summer.

Davit Bakradze made the abovementioned statement in the Pankisi Gorge, where he met with locals together with Defense Minister Tina Khidasheli.

"Now it is up to Brussels, where the European Parliament and the European Council will discuss a legislative proposal. We expect that a decision will be made in a few months. Georgia has already received very strong political support. We expect that this issue will be resolved during the summer,” he stated.
