Man firing at election campaign detained

Gori's regional court in eastern Georgia has sent a man to pre-trial detention, as he shot at Georgia’s ex-Defence Minister Irakli Okruashvili who was meeting with local voters in Gori.
The incident, which left Okruashvili’s guard and a member of public injured, took place on October 2.
Alexander Induashvili, who was charged with committing the crime, surrendered to police several days after the incident.
Okruashvili, Georgia’s ex-Defence Minister (2004-2006) under the previous United National Movement (UNM) government, ran as an independent majoritarian candidate of Gori in Saturday’s parliamentary elections.
The ex-Minister, who lived abroad for several years due to controversy with his former allies from the UNM, named a man so far only identified by his surname, Induashvili, as the offender shortly after the incident.
The injured were taken to hospital, as one person suffered a gunshot wound in the hand and another in the leg.
The wounds were not life-threatening and doctors said they would recover after a period of undertaking necessary treatment.
