Three Georgian soldiers were wounded during a blast at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan on Wednesday.
NATO Resolute Support mission peacekeepers Sergeant Giorgi Tsikarishvili and Private Irakli Kuchukhidze received minor injuries, while the health condition of Senior Lieutenant Iveri Buadze is critical, and he has undergone an operation.
After the blast, all three servicemen were taken to the military hospital of the Bagram Air Base; however, it is planned to transfer them to Germany for further medical treatment.
The President of Georgia, Giorgi Margvelashvili, has commented on the incident, wishing the soldiers a speedy recovery.
“In this difficult moment when our soldiers have been attacked, we pray for their recovery," Margvelashvili stated during his visit to the Defense Academy.
He added that Georgian soldiers are fighting for global security in order to defend the interests of their homeland.
The Defense Ministry of Georgia has released a statement regarding the health condition of the injured soldiers.
The statement reads that the health condition of Sergeant Giorgi Tsikarishvili and Private Irakli Kuchukhidze is satisfactory and their lives are not in danger.
“As for Senior Lieutenant Iveri Buadze's health, it is still serious, but doctors say that positive dynamics in the treatment process have been observed,” the ministry stated.
The media reports that a suicide bombing struck the US's largest military base in Afghanistan on Wednesday, hours after an Army general apologized for dropping leaflets found offensive by many in the Muslim country.
An explosion rocked the entrance to Bagram Air Base, located near Kabul, causing a number of casualties.
The attack, which has been claimed by the Taliban Islamist militant group, came hours after Major General James Linder apologized for spreading images of a dog, which is considered an unclean animal in Islam.
According to the media, the leaflets, which were airdropped by US aircraft, portrayed a large lion chasing the small, white dog with the Taliban logo on it and called on local Muslims to help US-led coalition forces find and kill Taliban supporters.
As reported, around 20 people were injured during the attack.
