“The United States (US) welcomes the 16th consolidated report of the Council of Europe (CoE) Secretary General - Conflict in Georgia," the statement was made by the US Ambassador to Georgia, Ian Kelly, on Thursday.
Kelly underlined that the US is concerned by the recent developments in Georgia’s occupied territories, adding any actions that will attract the attention of the international community towards the issue, are welcome.
“The United States is very concerned about the situation in the occupied territories, such as the closure of the checkpoint, as well as the illegal detention of persons crossing the administrative boundary line,” he said.
CoE Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland’s 16th consolidated report, which covers the period between April and September 2017, was discussed at the 1299th meeting of the Ministers’ Deputies on November 8.
The report builds on the previous consolidated reports, as well as Secretariat reports on the human rights situation in the conflict-affected areas in Georgia, and the report on the Council of Europe activities in the areas affected by the conflict and any updates.
The information presented in the report is also based on the CoE Secretariat delegation’s discussions with Georgian authorities, the Public Defender, and representatives of international organizations and local NGOs working on conflict reconciliation.
