Turkey’s Erdogan Claims Armenia Isolates itself from Energy, Regional Projects
Monday, December 11
(ISTANBUL) – Turkey’s authoritarian President RecepTayyip Erdogan on December 7 told the Turkish media that long-time rivalArmenia has chosen to isolate itself from all regional energy and transportation projects due to pressure from Yerevan’s powerful diaspora.
"The countries that have friendly relations with Turkey are thriving, while those that have hostile relations do not have any future," Erdogan told Turkey’s state-run media.
Diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey were severed in 1993 as Ankara’s close ally, Azerbaijan, lost ground to Russian-backed ethnic Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia’s attempts to have the 1915 massacres of more than 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks officially recognized as genocide.
