Non-Parliamentary opposition leader claims NATO-Georgia drills carry risks
Former Chairperson of the Parliament of Georgia and the leader of the non –parliamentary opposition party-Democratic Movement-United Georgia, Nino Burjanadze claims that the NATO-Georgia joint military drills are conducted in order to provoke and irritate Russia.
“NATO will never admit a country which has two occupied regions. Everyone understands this very well. Speaking about the NATO membership for Georgia is very harmful because it means we should accept the membership without Abkhazia and Tskhinvali,” Burjanadze said.
Burjanadze said that Georgia should act in line with the state interests in the process of cooperation with NATO and other international organizations.
“When you bring in American tanks under the American flag on the central highway, which is 500 meters away from Russian military bases, is this a clever behavior?,” she stated during the interview with the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.
Burjanadze says that demonstrating American weapons and tanks in Georgia irritate Russia which may cause negative consequences for Georgia.
Justice Council member says how lifetime judges should be appointed
A non-judge member of the High Council of Justice, a body responsible for unbiased judiciary in Georgia, initiates that those judges whose verdicts were dismissed by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) should not be appointed for life.
The statement comes after the Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili’s statements that the lifetime appointment of several judges has caused a stir in public, as the judges stood behind “very controversial cases and verdicts.”
Dolidze stated that the ECHR dismissed verdicts delivered by many Georgian judges on various high-profile cases and such judges should not be appointed for life.
“The ECHR decisions on Georgian cases should be the criteria for the High Council of Justice to allow or not a certain judge to serve lifetime in the role,” Dolidze said.
She stated that verdicts by 50 Georgian judges had been rechecked by the European Court.
Dolidze has already presented a draft of the initiative in the High Council of Justice. Now the Council should decide whether to approve the draft or not.
