(TBILISI)--Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili has congratulated Nikol Pashinyan on his election as the new prime minister of Armenia.
Kvirikashvili wished him “all the best in his future endeavors.”
“Georgia firmly supports and stands by Armenia. I believe strong ties and friendship between our countries will strengthen even more,” Kvirikashvili tweeted.
Responding to the kind wishes Pashinyan invited Kvirikashvili to Armenia and hoped that he will receive the same invitation from Georgia.
“Of course, I will visit Georgia as soon as possible. I also invite Prime Minister of Georgia to Armenia,”Pashinyan told the Georgian Public Broadcaster.
Pashinyan believes that relations between Georgia and Armenia will be enhanced further.
“Georgia is our friend nation. Georgia-Armenia friendly relations should be developed because we are fraternal countries and close partners. In our party’s program Georgia is crucial to Armenia.
“I think our relationships should not be based on the geopolitical aspect. Sometimes geopolitical factors have influence on our relationship and unfortunately, the impact is not always positive. Sometimes it is negative,“ Pashinyan stated.
The Armenian parliament elected opposition figure and protest leader Pashinyan as the new prime minister on Tuesday, after several weeks of mass protests against the ruling party.
It was the second attempt for Pashinyan to get elected as PM after the ruling Republican Party blocked his first bid on May 1st, despite initially promising not to hinder the election process.
Following the ruling party’s decision not to vote for Pashinyan the first time around, even larger rallies broke out which eventually convinced the Republican Party to cooperate.
Armenian PM held his first official visit in Karabakh on May 10 that angered Azerbaijan.
