Opposition Calls On President To Say Election Date

Davit Bakradze, presidential candidate of the European Georgia opposition, calls on President Giorgi Margvelashvili on Wednesday to appoint the date of the upcoming presidential elections as soon as possible.
As Bakradze told journalists, knowing the date will allow the opposition to conduct the election campaign in equal conditions.
"Our task will be to do our best in the first round and it is very important each supporter of the opposition to know that they should come to the elections. With high probability, there will be the second round and it will be very important the opposition to agree on a joint candidate in the second round,” Bakradze said.
“We must fight in the first and second rounds. As for Margvelashvili, it is up to him to decide whether he will run for presidency or not. This is his personal decision, while as for the appointment of the election date, we are expecting a quick step from him," Bakradze said.
Bakradze says that every day when the opposition does not know the date of elections, is a lost day for them.
Margvelashvili stated in his earlier statement that through his silence he is giving time to the ruling team and the opposition to choose and nominate strong candidates.
He believes that the Georgian Dream ruling party is waiting for his decision over the elections and that is why they have not nominated their candidate yet.
The ruling team dismisses this and says that they will name their candidate either at the end of July or in the beginning of August.
Together with Bakradze, 10 other opposition parties have named former Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze as a joint candidate for presidency.
