The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced on Tuesday that the tool for evaluating the risks of domestic violence and violence against women and the monitoring mechanism of restraining orders took effect on September 1.
The body claims that they have moved to a new stage regarding combating violence against women and domestic violence.
“Risk assessment tool is an important guarantee for the victim safety and prevention of abuse. The tool for assessing risks of domestic violence and violence against women and the monitoring mechanism of restraining orders have been developed by the Human Rights Department of the Interior Ministry in cooperation with NGOs and other state agencies, with the expert and financial support of the UN Women,” the Interior Ministry stated.
The ministry reported that for increasing the effectiveness of police response to violence against women and domestic violence, some recommendations and guidelines have been developed for the policemen who respond to such cases.
The civil sector and the ombudsperson have been called upon the Interior Ministry to respond more strictly to the cases of femicide and the domestic violence.
Georgian Public Defender, Nino Lomjaria, said in her report in June that in the last three years, 40 women became femicide victims in Georgia.
Lomjaria stated that despite the increased rate of restraining orders and reporting, unfortunately, the monitoring and evaluation system has only recently been introduced regarding the cases of killing of women.
She stated that in 2017 alone, investigations were launched in 26 cases of killing of women, 14 of which included signs of domestic crimes, and in 15 cases of attempted murder of women, 12 of which included signs of domestic violence.
