MEP Mamikins explains his visits to Syria
‘I have called twice and met with the representatives of Bashar Assad's administration and asked them not to recognize Abkhazia and so-called South Ossetia as independent countries, these are the regions of Georgia,- Andreas Mamikins, member of the European Parliament, said in his interview with the newspaper Kviris Palitra when commenting about opposition's criticisms about his unofficial visits to Syria.
"I have had two private visits to Syria in 2016-2017, and I met not only with the local government but also the United Nations and the Arab League's Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura, "Red Cross" and other actors. As for the issue of Abkhazia and so-called South Ossetia, I have called twice and met with the representatives of Bashar Assad's administration and asked them not to recognize Abkhazia and so-called South Ossetia as independent countries, these are the regions of Georgia, and told them that it would be better to improve the relationship between Syria and Georgia. That was my message for the Syrian administration, "said Andreas Mamikins.
