The Georgian and US government have agreed to jointly build a new military aerodrome on the Vaziani base near Tbilisi, which is often used for NATO Georgia joint drills.
The financial contribution will be shared. No further details have been provided yet.
The announcement has been made on Monday, after the meeting of US General Steve Lyons, a commander of the United States Transportation Command with Georgian Defence Minister Levan Izoria in Tbilisi.
Izoria claims that the new aerodrome will support the initiative of the NATO-Georgia Commission-the creation of the new readiness center.
The agreement about the new aerodrome is within the Georgia-US Georgian Defence Readiness Program.
The Georgian PM says that the new aerodrome will play its role for international drills in Georgia.
“The construction of an aerodrome at the Vaziani Military Base was singled out as a step forward in enhancing infrastructure for joint training. As it was pointed out, the construction of a military aerodrome will offer the country an opportunity to host military personnel from NATO member states, which will guarantee regional stability,” the government of Georgia says.
Georgia Defense Readiness Program is designed and executed by the US and the Georgian Armed Forces. The programme intends to support Georgian Armed Forces training and evaluation of infantry and to increase the defense capabilities of the Georgian military units for territorial defense, the Georgian Defence Ministry says.
