Nationalist Movement and Opposition Protest against Temporal Removal of Moratorium on the sale of Lands on Foreigners
Tuesday, December 11
Nationalist movement the Georgian March and the parliamentary minority the Alliance of Patriots have blocked the entrance of Tbilisi Justice House on Monday not to allow foreign nationals register agricultural lands in Georgia.
They have called “anti-state” to the recent decision of the Georgian Constitutional Court which gave several days to foreign citizens to register agricultural lands in the country.
The main entrance was closed for some time as the protesters tried to break in.
They called upon the employees of the Justice house not to work until 16 December, as on the day new Georgian constitutional comes into play which prohibits the same of such lands to foreign nationals.
Head of Parliament’s Agriculture Committee Otar Danelia stated that the decision of the Constitutional Court has created an “awkward situation.”
Last week the Constitutional Court of Georgia declared unconstitutional the moratorium imposed by the Government of Georgia in 2017 regarding the sale of agricultural lands to foreign citizens.
The lawsuit was filed by citizens of Greece, who failed to register their inherited land plots in Georgia.
The moratorium on alienation of agricultural lands to foreigners has been declared void, although the restrictions were withdrawn only until December 16 when the new constitution comes into effect.
The new Constitution will again impose restrictions envisaged by the moratorium.
