Prisoner on Hunger Strike Dies in Tbilisi

Prisoner Giorgi Pasieishvili, 35, who was not pleading guilty for the premeditated murder and went on hunger strike in August, died in Gudushauri hospital in Tbilisi on December 18.
The Special Penitentiary Service stated that since the day of the detention the man was constantly under the surveillance of the medical personnel and provided with proper medical care. However, despite many attempts, the accused refused to be provided with the assistance offered by the service, did not receive medicines and rejected offered examinations or tests.
Giorgi Pasieishvili, born in 1983, was arrested on July 31 of the current year and was transferred to N8 penitentiary establishment on August 1. He was claiming himself innocent and declared a hunger strike in protest.
According to the special penitentiary service, the relevant officials were immediately informed when the inmate went on hunger strike.
The Special Penitentiary Service explained that Pasieishvili was hospitalized five times to N18 medical establishment but he refused medical assistance and demanded to be sent back to the N8 prison.
The statement of the penitentiary Service reads that on November 24 and December 5the convict was taken to the Gudushauri National Medical Center. On December 5, Giorgi Pasieishvili was involved in the Suicide Prevention Program.
“On December 8, the accused was again taken to Gudushauri medical center, but he did not get out of the car and was taken back to prison. On December 14, the man was transferred to the Gudushauri clinic again and returned to the penitentiary establishment on the same day. On December 15, Giorgi Pasieishvili was transferred to Gudushauri Clinic where he stayed until his death,” The penitentiary service stated.
According to the service, Pasieishvili was using a wheelchair, had a weight loss and overall weakness. The deceased was diagnosed with acute liver failure, thrombocytopenia, coagulopathy, delusional disorder and hypoglycemia.
