British convict in a high-profile case, Jack Shepherd, who surrendered to Georgian police last Wednesday, has been sent to pre-extradition detention.
His lawyer in Georgia Mariam Kublashvili told the media that Shepherd,31, does not admit to the crime and says that the death of the 24-year-old woman was an accident.
Kublashvili also says that Shepherd came to Georgia legally via Turkey and that the man is waiting for the Court of Appeals in his homeland to declare his innocence.
Shepherd was convicted in Great Britain in July 2018 of the manslaughter by gross negligence of a woman on their first date in December 2015.
The ministry reported early on 23 January that they were involved in intensive cooperation with British law enforcers to identify Shepherd.
“Shepherd,31, came to the Vake-Saburtalo police department with his lawyer on 23 January,” the Georgian Interior Ministry says.
The BBC wrote that Shepherd, “who killed the woman” named Charlotte Brown in a speedboat crash on the River Thames in London in December 2015, has been in Georgia since March.
In his interview with Rustavi 2 Shepherd says that Brown was driving the boat when the accident happened.
He also claims that the deceased woman’s father is a powerful figure who could influence the judiciary and that is why he went on the run before his verdict was announced in London.
The UK interior minister and the UK embassy to Georgia have thanked the Georgian Interior Ministry for cooperation.
