Number of Georgian citizens seeking asylum in Germany increased again

The number of Georgian citizens seeking asylum in Germany has increased again, Jan Bittner, Head of the Economics and Law Department of the Embassy of Germany in Georgia, told InterPressNews.

In spite of this, Jan Bittner said that the chance that someone will be granted asylum is almost zero.

"First of all, let me point out that visa liberalization is a big achievement. Traveling to the EU is easier now for the citizens of Georgia. The number of Georgian visitors in Germany increased sharply last year.

After visa liberalization, the number of asylum seekers also increased. In particular, the number of such applications was tripled at the beginning of last year. This was an unacceptable situation that seriously threatened the visa-free regime. Meanwhile, the number of such applications in Germany significantly reduced, but the current number is still high despite the fact that Georgians do not have a chance of getting asylum. Every such case leads to unnecessary costs and is often related to negative consequences.

Last year, in the period when the number of asylum seekers was the highest, visa-free regime was in danger, as it was unacceptable for Germany to use the visa-free regime for these purposes. Then we started cooperation with the Georgian government and this cooperation has been very good. As a result, we achieved a reduction.

However, in January, the number of asylum seekers increased again. As I said, the chance of someone getting asylum is almost zero. Only 0.2% of applicants were granted asylum in 2018, even though all cases were discussed separately. I expect that the number of consents will be as low as last year," the Head of the Economics and Law Department of the German Embassy in Georgia said.

As of December 2018, the number of Georgian citizens seeking asylum in Germany was 303 and in January - 534. A total of 4 265 Georgian citizens requested asylum last year and only 0.2% of them were granted.
