MIA arrests three people accused of membership of “criminal underworld”

Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reports that they have detained three people with the charges of being a member of the criminal group.

Based on the judge’s ruling, the Law enforcers have detained criminal authorities: one of them was born in 1970 and another one in 1964 for being members of the criminal underworld whereas R.G, born in 1959 was accused of addressing a “thief in law”. The committed crime envisages from 3 to 10 years of imprisonment.

When searching the houses of the detainees the police seized a firearm “AK-74”, a pistol “ARAL” as well as 21 combat cartridges for automatic firearms, computer equipment and the cell phones of defendants, with which they have been communicating with the Georgian criminals living abroad.

The investigation is underway based on the facts of addressing the “thieves in law” and the membership of the “criminal underworld”.

Since January 2018, 5 so-called “Thieves in law” and 39 members of the “criminal underworld” have been detained. „As a result of the new amendments in law 32 people have been arrested for attending “thieves meetings”, supporting the business of the “criminal underworld”, addressing the “thief in law” or receiving material benefits form the above-mentioned relations,” stated Vladimer Bortsvadze, head of the Criminal Police Department

Also, according to him, 10 Georgian “Thieves in law” have been arrested as a result of large-scale operations conducted in the EU countries.

In April last year, the Parliament of Georgia adopted proposed amendments by the MIA on tightening of punishment for criminal organized group membership.
