Georgia’s weightlifter Talakhadze sets new world record

Famous Georgian sportsman Lasha Talakhadze, who was named the World's Best Weightlifter 2018 in February, has set a new world record after lifting 218 kg and improving his own record set previously.
In total, Talakhadze, 25, won the 2019 European Weightlifting Championships in +109 category and set three records and won three Gold medals in the snatch, clean and jerk.
In late January, the National Olympic Committee of Georgia named Talakhadze the Best Athlete of the Year 2018 and in November 2018 became the Number 1 in the world after he lifted 474 kg (a record 217 kg in a snatch and 257 kg in a push) in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
Irakli Turmanidze, the captain of the weightlifters' team, won Silver Medal in the same category.
In total, the Georgian national weightlifting team won 15 medals at the 2019 European Weightlifting Championships, which took part in Georgia’s Black Sea City Batumi form April 6 to April 13.
Georgian Prime Minister congratulated Georgian National weightlifting team and the whole country on the success of Lasha Talakhadze.
Prime Minister thanked all for organizing the event on such a high level.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the participants, weightlifters who showed us great sportsmanship and gave us unforgettable memories. I would also like to say that we are ready to host any international championship including the world cup,” Bakhtadze said.
The PM added that Georgia has reaffirmed that it can host tournaments at a very high level, adding it is only the beginning.
Georgian President, Salome Zurabishvili took to Facebook to congratulate Talakhadze on success.
“I congratulate Talakhadze on winning the European Weightlifting Championships and setting new records,” she wrote.
The championships ended with the records of Talakhadze and in total, Georgian athletes won 4 Gold, 6 Silver, and 3 bronze medals.
