A contract was signed between Ucha Uchaneishvili, Chairman of the Management Board of JSC Georgian State Electrosystem, and Dr. Klaus Veigel, regional director of Germany’s Credit Institute for Reconstruction (KfW) at a special event at the Radisson hotel.
The document signed between the parties envisages the implementation of large-scale construction and rehabilitation projects in Georgia, with the financial support of KfW.
Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, David Tvalabeishvili attended the event. He expressed his gratitude towards the bank’s representatives and talked about the importance of KfW’s support for Georgia.
According to him, projects that are supported by Germany’s Credit Institute for Reconstruction, including rehabilitation and construction of power lines, promoting the implementation of energy efficient technologies, etc. are an important part of the strategy implemented by the Georgian government in the energy sector.
“With increasing electricity consumption every year and building processing facilities in our country, it is of great importance to have the infrastructure needed to produce high-quality electricity, and we are trying to develop this direction with the support of international partner organizations. These are steps that are vital for our energy security that leads to full energy independence of Georgia,” noted Tvalabeishvili.
According to the Deputy Minister, one of the main directions of the project is the full rehabilitation of the power transmission network in Kakheti, as well as rehabilitation of substations in the region with the financial support of the KfW.
Within the framework of the project, the construction of the trans-boundary infrastructure will also be implemented, which will further enhance the country’s energy supply and facilitate export-import in this field.
The projects will enter the active phase in 2020, and the works will be completed in 2022.
In the Open Program of Energy Sector, the Government of Germany has provided financial support of 100 million Euros. The finances will be used for the expansion of power transmission network and the strengthening of the energy system.
5,7 million-euro grants will be spent on rehabilitation of 25 nursery schools in Batumi with energy efficiency standards, which is also an urgent priority and ensures improved learning environment and energy security.
According to the Ministry of Education, also with the support of KfW, 23 million euros will be invested in the development of education.
The five-year project will be launched this year, which involves construction and development of the Center of Excellence, designed for 1200 listeners in Didi Dighomi, Tbilisi. There will also be a modern type of dormitory on the territory of the center.
As the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, Mikheil Batiashvili noted, this is very important for the future development of vocational education in Georgia.
“In the direction of vocational education, a high-tech center will be created in Georgia that will be a multifunctional hub with an innovative concept and will play an important role in the development of future skills, establishment of new types of education services, as well as new initiatives within the public-private partnership,” said Batiashvili.
As of today, in the framework of financial and technical cooperation with Germany, new financial support is provided for Georgia in the public sector, with more than one billion euros grant, technical assistance, and preferential loan. According to the Ministry of Economy, the current investment projects are about 345 million euros.
