Georgia sees increased turnover and jobs in construction sector

In the second quarter of 2019 both - the turnover and the number of employees in the construction sector increased in Georgia.
The data of Georgia’s National Statistics Office (Geostat) reads that the turnover in the second quarter of 2019 in the construction business was GEL 1.87 billion which is an increased indicator compared to the previous year turnover - GEL 1.76 billion. The growth amounted to 6.3%.
Also, the turnover increased by 42% compared to the first quarter of 2019. In January-March of this year, the turnover of the construction sector amounted to 1.31 billion GEL.
As for the number of employees, the same trend is observed in this regard. Namely, in the second quarter of 2019 68,895 persons were employed in the construction sector, while in the same period of 2018 – the number of workers was 68,794. The growth is much more noticeable when comparing the first and second quarters of 2019. In January-March of this year, 63,837 people were employed, which means that in the second quarter their number increased by 5,058 persons.
The slight increase was observed in remuneration as well. Specifically, in the second quarter of 2019, the average monthly salary in the construction business was 1, 784.6 GEL, and in the second quarter of 2018 - 1,779.8 GEL. As for the first quarter of 2019, the average salary in the construction sector was GEL 1,567.3.
According to the statistics, in the first six months of 2019 construction of 1 236 buildings was completed in Georgia. Residential buildings were majority out of these buildings, followed by industrial and warehouse buildings, which were completed in the first six months of 2019. In addition to these, 7 shopping malls, 3 administrative buildings, 3 petrol stations, 5 hotels, and 4 café-restaurants were built in the first half of the year.
As for the permits issued in 2019, according to data provided by the National Statistics Office to 4,991 building permits were issued in Georgia, of which 67.5%, or 3,369 permits, were for residential buildings. Specifically, in the capital, this figure is 77%.
In January-June 2019, 1236 buildings became operational which is 6.3% more compared to the same period of the previous year.
In general, the volume of business sector turnover in Quarter II 2019 increased by 26.6 percent and amounted to GEL 25.2 billion. The data reads that the production value of the business sector is characterized by a growing tendency and in the II quarter of 2019, its volume equaled to 11.2 billion GEL, which is a 12 percent higher compared to 2018.
