Promotion of local democracy in Georgia: a Congress/NALAG joint event in Tbilisi
A joint event focusing on the promotion of local democracy in Georgia will be organised by the Congress and the National Association of Local Authorities of Georgia (NALAG), on 24 September 2019 in Tbilisi.
To mark the 20th anniversary of Georgia’s membership in the Council of Europe, the 70th anniversary of the Council of Europe and the 25th anniversary of the Congress, this conference will bring together Georgian local authorities, parliamentarians, government officials, Congress representatives and the international community.
Xavier Cadoret, Congress Vice-President and President of the Chamber of Local Authorities, and Congress Secretary General Andreas Kiefer will address the conference, which will also include a panel discussion on local democracy and equal participation. Congress Spokesperson Bryony Rudkin will present the European Local Democracy Week, which has as its theme this year “Local democracy: building trust”. Congress Vice-President Tamar Taliashvili will present the European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life, launched by the Council of European Municipalities and Regions in 2006, which will be signed by Georgian municipalities at the end of the conference.
On 23 September, Vice-President Cadoret and Secretary General Kiefer will hold bilateral meetings with Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Maya Tskitishvili, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Lasha Darsalia as well as Zaza Gabunia, Head of the Committee of Regional Policy and Self-Government in the Parliament of Georgia. Discussions will focus, among others, on the forthcoming Georgian Chairmanship of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers. The Congress delegation will also meet with Kahka Kaladze, Mayor of Tbilisi, Head of the Georgian Delegation to the Congress and President of NALAG, as well as with the Georgian Delegation to Congress.
