De-facto Republic of Abkhazia’s parliament voted for the so-called president Raul Khajimba’s resignation and approved of him quitting the cabinet.
The voting process was secretive and 32 MPs voted for Khajimba’s resignation, 2 voted against.
Before the so-called Presidential elections in Abkhazia, the substitute president will be now De-facto Prime Minister Valeri Bganba.
On January 12, De-facto President Raul Khajimba has requested his resignation from the ‘presidency’ to the parliament, few days after intense protests against his presidency which started on January 9. Supreme Court approved opposition’s appeal and annulled the so-called elections on January 10, the de-facto president planned on appealing to the Supreme court before announcing his resignation.
The so-called Central Electoral Commission in Abkhazia was against Khajimba leaving the presidency but they announced the date of ‘elections’ on January 10. The new ‘election’ will be held on March 22, 2020.
Raul Khajimba will no longer take part in so-called elections in 2020. Opposition leader candidate Aslan Bzhania is known to be taking part in Spring ‘elections’.
After resignation, Raul Khajimba has issued a statement for the population of Abkhazia where he thanks them for their support, and says that he has done everything to prevent clashes and will always try his best to “fight for peace and the country's development.”
“I have and will always be supportive of elections and political processes to develop accordingly to our constitution and law. Another way is fatal for Abkhazia’s young Republic.”
