EMC Calls on Prosecutorial Council not to Support Shotadze's candidacy as Prosecutor General
The Center for Human Rights Education and Monitoring (EMC) calls on the Prosecutor's Council not to support the candidacy of former Chief Prosecutor Irakli Shotadze for the post of Prosecutor General.
"It is noteworthy that Irakli Shotadze has resigned as chief prosecutor amid widespread public outcry," the EMC statement said. The organisation estimates his work at the prosecution as an inefficient and systematic failure in the Khorava street case.
“The ongoing processes and the extent of the violations in the Khorava Street case directly pointed to the Chief Prosecutor's political responsibility in the process, which could have been attributed to Shotadze's direct involvement or his inadequate management of the system, which made it possible for influential people at prosecutor’s office interfere illegally,” reads the statement.
The Center for Human Rights Education and Monitoring calls on the Prosecutorial Council to present to the Parliament politically neutral, qualified and merit-based candidates.
Former Chief Prosecutor of Georgia Irakli Shotadze is among the nine candidates nominated for the vacant position of Prosecutor General by the Prosecutorial Council. Former Chief Prosecutor Irakli Shotadze has applied to the Council of the Technical University of Georgia to apply for the position.
31 MPs fined for filling out declarations incorrectly
Public Service Bureau released information about fining MPs for incorrectly filling out declarations. They will be fined 20% of their monthly salary. The majority of the fined MPs are majority members. Georgian Dream members and independent MPs are among the fined, as well as the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava.
The Independent Commission has selected 297 officials' declarations and 310 declarations by the electronic system. A total of 607 officials were monitored in 2019.
